Bruce Highway Western Alternative: Updates on Stage 3
The Bruce Highway Western Alternative (BHWA), also known as the Moreton Motorway, is aimed at reducing congestion and catering to the future traffic demands of South East Queensland. Divided into four stages, the project is currently focused on community consultation and planning for Stages 3 and 4.
Take a closer look at the details of Stage 3 and what it means for local residents and stakeholders.
What is the Bruce Highway Western Alternative?
The BHWA is a planned motorway for the Moreton Bay region, providing an alternative route to the Bruce Highway. With the region’s population expected to grow significantly in the coming years, this project aims to improve traffic flow and reduce travel times between North Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Stages 1 and 2, which will connect Moodlu and Narangba, are already in the planning completion phase. The next step involves refining the plans for Stage 3 Bruce Highway Western Alternative.

Stage 3 of the BHWA focuses on the section between Narangba and Bald Hills in North Brisbane.
This stage is critical for improving connectivity and reducing congestion in the area. However, the exact route for this section has not yet been finalised. You can participate in the consultation process by visiting this link.
Why is Stage 3 Important?
Stage 3 plays a crucial role in connecting the rapidly growing suburbs of North Brisbane with the rest of the Moreton Bay region. As the population grows, the existing infrastructure will struggle to handle increased traffic volumes. The completion of this stage will:
- Provide a faster and more efficient route for commuters and freight vehicles.
- Alleviate congestion on local roads and the Bruce Highway.
- Improve access to key employment and residential areas.
When will the Stage 3 route for the Bruce Highway Western Alternative be announced?
The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is still reviewing the proposed routes for Stage 3. Community consultation is ongoing, and no timeline has been confirmed for the announcement of the preferred route. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the consultation process to share their feedback and concerns.
If your property will be acquired by the Government, you will receive a letter to notify you and be invited to a community meeting so you can understand what’s involved with the process.
Land resumption and community impact
If you live along the proposed corridor for Stage 3, there is a possibility your property may be acquired as part of the project.
Should this happen, TMR will notify you with a letter and invite you to a community meeting. These meetings are designed to help property owners understand the process, their rights and the options available to them.
